Training for full motorcycle licence (P,A1,A)
For riders with CBT
After completing Compulsory Basic Training riders can train with us to achieve the required standard to pass the DSA motorcycle test for a full motorcycle licence.
Which licence options are available to you will depend upon your age, the type and power of motorcycle on which you choose to train and take your test, and on the type of test you apply for.
We can offer training on your own bike, or on one of our school bikes.
16 Years: Moped Only
At the age of 16, following CBT, a learner may only ride a moped which is defined as having engine capacity not exceeding 50 cc and a maximum speed not exceeding 50 km/h (31 mph). They can go on to pass a theory test and a practical motorcycle test in order to gain full moped entitlement, however at 16 the practical test may only be taken on a moped and this will give you a Category P licence which only allows you to ride a moped
17 Years and Older: Restricted Licence
At the minimum age of 17, following CBT a learner can go on to pass a theory test and a practical motorcycle test in order to gain full motorcycle entitlement. The practical test must be taken on a bike of at least 75 cc.
However if the test is taken on a bike of more than 75 and less than 120 cc, a Category A1 light motorcycle licence will be obtained. The A1 licence restricts the holder to riding a motorcycle not more than 125 cc with a maximum power of 11 kW (15 hp).
If the test is taken on a bike of between 120 and 125 cc, capable of 100 km/h (62 mph), then a Category A motorcycle licence will be obtained. The holder will then be able to ride any bike restricted to or not exceeding 25 kW (33 bhp). After two years this restriction is automatically removed.
This licence will include a full licence to ride a moped as a no cost extra.
21 Years and Older: Direct Access and Accelerated Access
Above the age of 21, a learner can go on from CBT to pass a theory test and a practical motorcycle test using the Direct Access Scheme in order to gain full motorcycle entitlement. For Direct Access the practical test must be taken on a motorcycle having at least 35 kW (47 hp) and it avoids the two year restrictions and allowing the use of any size of motorcycle.
A holder of a Category A1, or of a restricted Category A licence who has reached 21 during the two years probation can take take a further test riding the larger bike to allow them to ride any size motorcycle and so shorten the two year wait. This is known as Accelerated Access.
Candidates following either of these routes may not ride a larger bike whilst training unless they are supervised by a licenced instructor who is in radio contact with them, but with Accelerated Access they do not need to repeat the theory test or CBT
